ADC-NJ calls on CBS to terminate the Imus show

Clifton, NJ | April 12, 2007 | -The New Jersey Chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC-NJ) is deeply outraged by the recent racially charged and inappropriate remarks made by Don Imus about the members of the Rutgers University Women's Basketball Team (Lady Knights).  These comments are deeply hurtful not only to the Lady Knights, but to every New Jerseyean and to Americans as a whole.  Imus' racial denigration of these young women is an attempt to denigrate all of New Jersey's citizens. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Imus has used such vile language.  He has had a long and well documented history of insulting and offending many people and ethnic groups. This includes his denigration of Arab and Muslim Americans on several occasions including the use of the derogatory term "rag heads".

The Lady Knights, their Coach and the men and women of Rutgers University represent all that is positive about New Jersey and the United States.  ADC-NJ, its membership in New Jersey and nationally, Christian, Muslim, Arab and non-Arab alike, strongly denounce the wrong and hurtful remarks of Imus and implore all Americans to do so by standing up against all persons who seek to undo the advances made for civil rights in our country.

“While freedom of expression should be protected and respected in our nation, there is no place in American civil society for the tolerance of hate and slurs such as those hurled at the Lady Knights.  All Americans should be vigilant and quick to protect the long and venerable heritage of civil rights in our country.  This heritage has been especially cultivated and nurtured in the Garden State” stated Hani Khoury, President of the ADC-NJ.

ADC-NJ wishes to thank MSNBC for their decision to no longer simulcast the "Imus in the Morning" radio program. We applaud American Express Co., Staples Inc., Procter & Gamble Co., General Motors Corp. and others in corporate America for their stand against hate and for removing theirs ads and corporate image from the Imus broadcast.  We call upon CBS Group, the owners of WFAN-AM and Westwood One, which distributes ''Imus in the Morning'' to stations across the country, to immediately terminate the Imus show.
