| ADCNJ member Hassan Mahmoud's letter to the Editor,
"War would Backfire"
As published in the Star Ledger 12/04/02
In his Nov. 16 letter, Martin Cotler justifies a war on Iraq by
citing the need to control its oil. A war would entail the killing of tens
of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians and the destruction of Iraqi
towns and infrastructure. It would also result in the deaths of our
soldiers, a cost of $200 billion and an increase in the price of oil,
harming our fragile economy. We can peacefully buy Iraqi oil as we buy
Japanese cars and the products of other countries. After all, Iraqis can't
drink their oil; they have to sell it to somebody.
Telling Muslims we are going to invade their countries to grab their oil
and calling their religion wicked and their Prophet a terrorist, as Jerry
Falwell, Pat Robertson and Franklin Graham do, won't endear us to them. It
will enrage them and push the extremists among them to terrorism. Spending
millions on silly videos telling them how wonderful is our life in America
won't deter them from taking revenge against us.
