West Caldwell, May 17, 2004: While the world is focused on the Iraqi occupation, Israel has been illegally demolishing hundreds of Palestinian homes in the Rafah region of the Gaza Strip. In fact, since the early part of 2000, over two thousand Palestinian homes have been unjustifiably demolished without due process or compensation to their owners- all in the name of security. This represents a 2500% increase in home demolitions since late 2000, when on average,
a Palestinian was forced into homelessness every 2.5 hours according to the United Nations. Israel’s right to defend its citizens cannot and should never be achieved by the reckless and savage treatment of the Palestinian people under its military occupation. This collective punishment of an entire population will not in the long run produce the security or the peace Israel claims to seek. Meanwhile, destruction of personal property, killing of innocent civilians, many of whom are children and women, must be publicly condemned and we call upon our American government to demand Israel cease from further destruction and carnage in the Gaza Strip.
ADCNJ President, Aref Assaf, stated “that thousands of Palestinians will now become homeless and destitute- aggravating their already dire conditions. It is most distressing that our US government has not engaged Israel to stop its breach of all covenants of the Geneva Convention and basic inalienable human rights. Our military and economic aid to Israel must be withheld to render Israel’s occupation untenable not merely in human cost but in financial terms. No military solution will resolve the Palestine- Israel conflict. Only a peaceful, just and all-inclusive approach can lead to a permanent settlement to the conflict.”
