West Caldwell, June18, 2004- The New Jersey Chapter of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, ADCNJ, condemns the senseless murder of American civilian Paul Johnson Jr. in Saudi Arabia who had been held since last week by kidnappers linked to Al-Qaeda.
A video posted on an Internet web site showed the beheading of Mr. Johnson.
Mr. Johnson , originally from New Jersey worked in Saudi for many years. His body was found on in the outskirt of Riyadh, the Saudi capital. The group that carried out the murder claimed that their action was in retaliation for America's foreign policy in the Middle East and for the Saudi government's refusal to release suspected al-Qaeda terrorists held in Saudi Arabia.
In its statement, the NJ civil rights group’s President Aref Assaf said:
" The Arab American community is outraged by the senseless murder of Mr. Johnson. We categorically condemn this cold-blooded action and denounce any individual and groups who would commit such uncivil and unjustified acts of murder and inhumanity. Implicating the name of religion to justify such acts is most abhorrent and does a great disservice to Islam and Muslims worldwide.
Mr. Assaf continued: “ We implore all people of good conscience to unite their efforts to reconcile their differences in a peaceful and just manner. Such acts of mindless violence in the name of religion will only fuel more hatred and bloodshed. A wrong act cannot be corrected by a similarly wrong and immoral reprisal. We offer our sincerest condolences to the Johnson family and do urge level-headed leaders to engage in constructive and collaborative effort to counter terrorism worldwide. ”
